Sif is the wife of Thor. Her name translates into one with the golden hair. Thor was very proud of Sif’s long locks and beauty and would always boast about it to everyone, especially when he was enjoying and drinking his mead. Sif had a golden comb with which she would comb her golden hair. She would wash her hair in streams of sparkling water and would dry her hair on big boulders of rocks. As she had long and thick golden locks of hair, they would take a lot of time to dry. At times, Sif would doze off. One such time when Sif was drying her hair, the mischievous and trickster Loki, cast a spell on her and put her into a deep sleep. That’s when he chopped off all her hair. When the spell was broken, Sif woke up only to discover all her hair had disappeared. She panicked and wept bitterly when she saw all her golden locks on the rocks and could not believe this tragedy had happened to her. With a dejected heart, she went home. In the evening when Thor came, she told him what had happened and wept inconsolably. Seeing his wife’s pain, Thor set on a mission to find the culprit. When he found out that Loki was the culprit, his anger knew no bounds. Odin intervened and told Thor not to kill Loki. Loki was ordered by Odin to find a solution and that’s when he went under the earth where the ugly gnomes lived. The gnomes were extremely talented and magical worksmiths who knew where the best metals and minerals were hidden and with their hammer and tongs and magical instruments could create fashion and beauty articles. The gnomes also liked Loki as he always flattered them while everyone else was rude with them. They created a cap of golden silks for which Loki gifted them the Earth which was already theirs. Then he returned to Asgard and gave the cap to Sif who was delighted as it gave her back her golden hair and beautiful looks. This is how the wig made by the gnomes saved Loki and pacified Thor.
